HGI Developer of the Year: Robert G. Schaedle – Chartwell Hospitality LLC

Robert G. Schaedle of Chartwell Hospitality LLC is proud of the Hilton Garden Inn Nashville Convention Center, TN project that his company won among heated competition. The 215 room hotel will be across the street from the Music City Center in downtown Nashville and near the new Convention Center that has generated significant hotel demand. The hotel is slated to open 3rd quarter 2014.

Reputation counts

“Nashville is a strong hotel market and there was competition to obtain this franchise,” Robert says. “Our development track record and our approach of delivering more than what is expected in product and design is something in which we take much pride.

Our proposal is to build a ‘Premier’ Hilton Garden Inn on a site large enough to develop a great hotel plus provide sufficient parking for our guests. We have a very strong development team, including an architect, civil engineer, interior designer and general contractor with significant experience in the hospitality industry,” he adds.

Patience required

The City of Nashville has enacted several new Urban Design Overlays that govern design and entitlements in the area leading to the new Convention Center. Robert says working through the various levels of approvals that were being adopted, and then changed, required patience and commitment.

“We always learn something new on each development opportunity we pursue. A good best practice is to work with city planners early in the process as they engage consultants to create comprehensive new planning ordinances. This prevents major surprises about architectural requirements. Being in the loop saved us time and money,” he says.

“The Hilton Development Team (Denise Carpenter and Steve Crable) as well as Phil Cordell have been very supportive during the franchise approval process. They shared helpful perspective about market and demand generators and offered guidance around the project's design and functionality to achieve maximum potential and performance,” he says. “We believe it will be one of the nicest new Hotels in the entire Nashville market and one that will make us, Hilton Worldwide and our investors proud.”
